Grief and the Holidays

This lecture, on Healthy Grieving and Coping through the upcoming Holiday Season, is for any?one living with loss or ministering to those who are. The presenter is an adjunct lecturer at WTU who teaches both the Pastoral Care of the Aging and the Pastoral Care of the Dying. He specializes in working with people facing life-limiting illness, death, and grief.

Is Christ using my ministry to make Himself present?

Reflections on liturgical celebration and the ways in which Christ is present as we pray. How does my reading, psalm-singing, praying out loud, music-making, welcoming, serving, ministering communion, preaching or presiding give the Lord an opportunity to bring my neighbor into his own response to God’s love? How do I discover my neighbor’s making Christ present to and in me? How do our practice, our spirituality and our theology speak to each other? Models of Prayer

Models of prayer often turn into models of spirituality that impact not only the relationship of a person with God but also ways of viewing ecclesiology and practical expectations of relationships with other Christians. This talk will consider four models of prayer, - liturgical, contemplative, charismatic and vocal - and compare and contrast their theological assumptions and practical impact.

Religion and Spirituality: Is There a Disconnect?

Are religion and spirituality the same thing? Can one be a spiritual person but not religious? Is religion an obstacle to spirituality? What constitutes an authentic Christian spirituality?
This presentation will explore these and related questions in an attempt to understand the appropriate relationship between religion and spirituality in the Christian tradition.
The Washington Theological Union is a Roman Catholic graduate school of theology and ministry. Challenged and inspired by the charisms of its religious communities, the Union educates people of all backgrounds for collaborative ministry in the Church and service to the World. Located in the beautiful neighborhood of Takoma Park, Washington Theological Union offers an array of degree programs, continuing educations courses and numerous programs for academic and spiritual enrichment.
The Nourishment for Ministry Program was created to enrich ordained and lay ministers on key theological and pastoral issues. Each month a different member of the WTU faculty lectures on a topic in their area of expertise and then leads an informal discussion allowing ministers to share their own experiences and reflect upon the lecture.
