An Excerpt from the Book: “We never come to thoughts,” Heidegger says. “They come to us.” That is the way it was with the thought that came to me in the wee hours, to trust God beyond my own understanding of God. The very next day and the day after I shared the thought with the young people I was teaching, and then I shared it with two friends my own age, and one said to trust God beyond our own understanding is what is required of us in dying, for our own understanding cannot penetrate the veil of death. I read Tolkien with hope (I read this passage that night): That night they heard no noise. But either in his dreams or out of them, he could not tell which, Frodo heard a sweet singing running in his mind: a song that seemed to come like a pale light behind a grey rain-curtain, and growing stronger to turn the veil all to glass and silver, until at last it was rolled back, and a far green country opened before him under a swift sunrise. That was “poetic wisdom,” I know, but the thought that had come to me, to trust God beyond my own understanding, may have been God revealing God to me and God revealing me to me.
