The church was built in 1991 and stands on Byzantine-era ruins, possibly those of St. Sophia (Holy Wisdom). A large mosaic was also discovered in the crypt at the level of the ancient street. The center of the mosaic depicted a pair of sandals indicating where Mary was believed to have been standing.
