Station IV: Jesus Meets His Mother
“Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed – and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ His mother treasured all these things in her heart.” Luke 2:34-35; 51
Stabat Mater
verse 8
For the sins of His own nation,
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent
At the site of the Armenian-Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Spasm, Mary is believed to have spoken to Jesus on the way to the crucifixion. The church was built in 1991 and stands on Byzantine-era ruins, possibly those of St. Sophia (Holy Wisdom). A large mosaic was also discovered in the crypt at the level of the ancient street. The center of the mosaic depicted a pair of sandals indicating where Mary was believed to have been standing.
