An Excerpt from the Book: The Thirteenth Station: Jesus is taken down from the cross. Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. All: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world! Leader: Holding her dying child, the young mother silently screams her questions to God: Why my child? Why this innocent suffering? Why now? She feels the warmth ebb away as death takes its final toll. She wonders why her heart continues to beat while her child’s is now silent. She closes her eyes and painfully sees the long struggle ahead of her — begging for a little more time, holding on, fearing to let go, and struggling to set her child free. All: Jesus your lifeless body now rests in the arms of your sorrowful mother. As she received you into her womb at Nazareth, held you at Bethlehem, clung to you on the flight into Egypt, reached out to you in the temple at Jerusalem, and walked with you to Calvary, her arms now cling to you while her tears cleanse your crucified body. Lord Jesus, your mother’s pierced heart opened her arms to hold the suffering of our world. Pierce our hearts with your grace and open our arms to others.
