Our environment Makes a Difference
When It Comes to Sustaining Our Sense of Humor

from the Promise of Virtue by Eugene Hemrick

Humor encourages you to maximize that which brightens and lifts our spirits. To accomplish this, it invites us to reflect on our physical environment and to ask? "Does it contain an uplifting atmosphere." If so, what exactly in it does this?" "If not, what needs to be added or subtracted?" "Could it be that it is too cluttered and that it is cutting down our space?" "How much color does it contain and do other colors have a matching schemem that speaks to our aesthetic side?" "Does it have pictures and do we ever change them to renew the environment's spirit?" "Does it have a touch of nature and contain flowers, or even a small running fountain?"

Humor completes this line of questioning by asking us, "How much do we fully appreciate the way our environment determines our disposition?"

Today, science is learning that bright cheerful environments have enormous healing powers for fighting fatigue and depression. A recommendation for those who tend to be gloomy and sullen is to create as much light and beauty as possible in their living and working environments.

"But you, brothers, are not in darkness,
for that day to overtake you like a thief.
For all of you are children of light
and children of the day. We are not of
the night or of darkness.
— 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5, NAB
