Book: Liturgical Gestures, Words, Objects
Selected from Assembly in honor of Mark Searle
Edited by Eleanor Bernstein, CSJ
Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy, Notre Dame, IN, pp. 54

An Excerpt from the Introduction:

This collection of poetic reflections explores the ways in which the liturgy invites our participation, concentrating in particular upon the gestures and actions common to all the faithful. The approach is neither scriptural, nor historical, nor strictly speaking anthropological. Instead, we invited the writers — believers — to reflect upon their engagement in various liturgical actions and suggest briefly what these meant to them. What they offer is not information but meditation. This approach respects the nature of liturgical gesture as symbolic activity: activity which reveals a wealth of meaning, but whose significance is best caught by hints and intimations rather than by systematic expose.

An Excerpt from the book:
Kneeling
ME knelen, fr OE eneowlian; akin to OE eneow knee

The wrestler, forced to his knees. . .
The lover, proposing on his knees. . .
The plaintiff, going down on her knees. . .
The victim, flinging herself to her knees. . .
The visionary, dropping to his knees. . .
The beggar, groveling on her knees. . .
The loyal subject, falling to her knees. . .
The loser, brought to his knees. . .
The worshiper, taking to his knees. . .

. . .before our God, we are all of these
